Is Human Intelligence Declining?
Recent research and international studies suggest that our ability to process information, reason, and solve problems may be decreasing. Over the past 10 to 12 years, some reports show that more people are having trouble with basic cognitive tasks. For example, studies indicate that many adults now struggle with tasks like reading long texts, concentrating for long periods, and solving simple math problems. This is a surprising trend that makes many experts worry about the future.
One possible reason for this decline is the change in our reading habits. Today, people, including many in Brazil, read fewer books and long articles. Instead of spending time with complex texts, many of us now prefer short posts and quick updates on social media. When we read less, our brain does not get as much practice with deep thinking, reflection, and the critical skills needed to understand and connect ideas.
Another important factor is the way we use digital devices. Smartphones and social media have changed how we interact with information. In the past, we used our devices in a more active way – reading articles, watching informative videos, and discussing ideas with friends. Nowadays, the experience is often passive. We scroll quickly through posts, read only short captions, and rarely engage in discussions that require deep thought. This constant rush of information and frequent notifications can make it hard for us to focus on one topic for a long time.
A study published by a well-known organization showed a sharp rise in the number of adults who have difficulty concentrating and learning new things. In high-income countries, like those in the OECD, about 25% of adults now struggle with basic numerical reasoning or with combining different pieces of information from a text.
Although some people believe that technology itself is to blame, it may not be only the internet or smartphones. The way we use these tools has changed over time. Our current habits seem to give less exercise to our brains.
